Team Upstate seeks St. Baldrick's participants

Team Upstate seeks participants to help raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which directly funds pediatric oncology research. The St. Baldrick’s Day event will be held March 24 at Spinning Wheel, 7384 Thompson Rd, North Syracuse. The Upstate community, family and friends are all welcome to join Team Upstate, fundraise, and volunteer to have your head shaved. Participants who sign up prior to March 5 will receive a Team Upstate shirt. Instructions on where to meet will be emailed to registered participants a week prior. Upstate Innovation Day is Jan. 23

Upstate Innovation Day will be held Jan. 23 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CNY Biotech Accelerator Theater, 841 E. Fayette St., Syracuse. The Pharmaceutical, Biologic and Medical Device Research and Commercialization—including Upstate’s CNY Biotech Accelerator Medical Device Innovation Challenge (MDIC)—Pitch Event will offer a $5,000 pitch award. NYS pension presentation is Jan. 25

Professional Development and Learning assessment survey due Jan. 25

Professional Development and Learning seeks insight from staff into the current needs and trends surrounding workforce development at Upstate. Learning needs assessment surveys ensure we offer courses, microcredential tracks, and other opportunities that assist with growth and advancement at Upstate. The 2020 learning needs assessment resulted in the creation of three popular microcredential tracks: Leading Self, Learning to Lead, and Leading Others. Dr Elizabeth Blackwell T-shirt sale set for Jan. 24, 25 and Feb.7

Commemorative T-shirts in celebration of the 175 anniversary of Dr Elizabeth Blackwell’s graduation from medical school will be on sale Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Weiskotten Hall lobby; Thursday, Jan. 25 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first floor of the Academic Building near the Hope Café; and Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the Ninth Floor Lobby of Weiskotten Hall. Shirts are $10 each (cash or credit) and available in gray or navy.

Upstate Transplant Center relocation is final Jan. 30

Upstate Transplant Center will relocate to Upstate Specialty Services at Harrison Center, Suite A, 550 Harrison St. The location change is to better serve patients. The clinic will welcome patients to the new location beginning Jan. 30.  All phone and fax numbers remain the same.

World Cancer Day is Feb. 5

Join Upstate Cancer Center, She Matters and the Mammovan Monday, Feb. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for a World Cancer Day information and screening event at Salt City Market. World Cancer Day is an international initiative to raise awareness of cancer in a positive and inspiring way. Information and valuable resources about cancer prevention, screenings, and treatment will be offered. Upstate Foundation Valentine Ball for All is Feb. 7

The Upstate Foundation and Salt City Road Warriors will host the Valentine Ball for All Wednesday, Feb. 7 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Drumlins Country Club in Syracuse. The inclusive format replaces the Father Daughter Valentine Ball, and is open to any child or children age 3 and up and their parent(s), guardian or caregiver. The event will offer entertainment, special guests, face painting, photo booths, a craft project, gifts and more. Proceeds will benefit the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Campaign. Deadline to purchase tickets for the Black History Month Gala is Feb. 16

Upstate Student National Medical Association in collaboration with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will host the annual Black History Month Gala Feb. 24 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Semi-formal attire is requested. Student admission is $40 and general admission is $75. Proceeds will fund student scholarships. The deadline to purchase tickets or a table is Feb. 16 via email at upstatesnma@snma.org.

Advocates to accept applications for grant funding in February

The Advocates for Upstate will accept applications for grant funding Feb. 1 to 29. All departments and programs affiliated with Upstate on all campuses are eligible to apply for funding to be used between June 1, 2024 and May 31, 2025. Advocates for Upstate’s mission is to improve patient care and satisfaction, support medical education and enhance community health. Items or services that can be funded through department budgets are not eligible for Advocates Grant Funding. Detailed overview and guidelines along with application forms are available on Advocates for Upstate’s website. The Informed Patient podcast this week: pelvic floor exercises, TBI care, and hepatic artery infusion

The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about mind-body and pelvic floor exercises, research into traumatic brain injury and a treatment option for some cancers that spread to the liver. 

The Informed Patient podcast and HealthLink on Air radio show are produced by Upstate Marketing and University Communications.
