Native American Heritage Month events underway

In celebration of Native American Heritage Month, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion presents the following events:

—Native American meal offerings at lunch in campus cafeterias Nov. 8, 15, 22, 23.

—Presentation by Dr. Mary Owen. Nov. 14 from noon to 1 p.m. in Medical Alumni Auditorium, Weiskotten Hall.

—Documentary Film Screening of The Good Mind. Nov. 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in 4414 A, Academic Building.

—Cultural Talk with story teller Regis Cook. Nov. 21 from noon to 1 p.m. in 4414 A, Academic Building.

—Documentary Film Screening of Voices from the Barrens, Native People, Blueberries and Sovereignty. Nov. 27 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

—Boarding School Experience Presentation. Nov. 30 from noon to 1:30 p.m. in 4414 A, Academic Building. Pete Hill will provide insights into the boarding school experience.

rTMS study seeks participants with concussion-related headaches

Upstate Physical Therapy Education seeks adults with chronic post-concussion headaches to participate in a clinical trial. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, will be used to manage headaches and other post-concussion symptoms. This study takes place in the Motion Analysis Lab at the Institute for Human Performance. Parking and compensation will be included. Global Health seeks study participants

Yearly vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself from the flu virus and its complications. Global Health seeks individuals between 18 and 85 years of age for a study to help researchers learn more about an investigational flu vaccine. Registration open for 2024 Health Justice Conference

Registration is now open for the 2024 Health Justice Conference to be held Jan. 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in room 4414 B/C at the Academic Building. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. There will also be an option to attend via Zoom. Center for Philosophy, Psychology and Psychiatry presentation is Nov. 9

Philosopher Richard Boothby, PhD, professor of philosophy at Loyola University, will present Embracing the Void: Rethinking the Origin of the Sacred Thursday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. in the second-floor grand rounds area of 713 Harrison St. Space is limited. R.S.V.P. to Michael Miller at MillerMi@Upstate.edu prior to the event. Boothby specializes in existential and phenomenological philosophy, as well as philosophy of psychoanalysis. This talk will explore the work of Freud and Lacan on our relationship to the unknown other, or "the Thing," and how this may inform the religious impulse.

Explore academic opportunities at Upstate Medical University Nov. 9

Upstate Admissions will host an event highlighting academic opportunities Thursday, Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. outside Café 750 on the second floor of Upstate University Hospital. Staff will be available to discuss all opportunities at Upstate from bachelor’s to doctorate level, including advancing a future in health care and financial support. Virtual support offered to Upstate Community Hospital staff for transition to Hyperdrive through Nov. 11

Upstate IMT will offer virtual support to Epic users transitioning to Hyperdrive at Upstate Community Hospital now through Nov. 11 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Staff will have access to personalized guidance and assistance for troubleshooting problems. Email sent the week of Nov. 3 provided users with information on how to access real-time virtual support, including where to find Hyperdrive support in Epic and how to troubleshoot common issues. Hyperdrive, which hosts Hyperspace, will become accessible to all Epic users, across all Upstate locations, beginning Nov. 28. Easy for You is Nov 14

Easy for You, Upstate's tobacco treatment program, will be held Tuesday, Nov. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the multidisciplinary suite (C 3068) on the third floor of Upstate Cancer Center. Everyone with an Upstate ID is welcome to receive help quitting tobacco, chew, and vape. Free nicotine replacement is available. Upstate Gala ‘Diamonds and Denim’ is set for Nov. 17 

Gala 2023, hosted by the Upstate Foundation, will be held at the Oncenter Friday, Nov. 17. Festivities begin at 8 p.m., with a patron party for sponsors starting at 7 p.m. The Diamonds and Denim theme welcomes guests to balance comfort with formal attire. For instance, men could wear a jacket with their denim, and women could wear bedazzling jewels and some form of denim. (Yes, you can wear jeans!) Other aspects of the Foundation’s signature event remain the same: small plate dining stations, live band, short presentation and plenty of time for socializing and dancing. There will be a special guest band performance by the The Consultants featuring drummer Dr. Lawrence Chin, and someone will win a diamond. Gala proceeds will benefit the Upstate Foundation’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Campaign. The Your Cause sponsorship offers Upstate employees an opportunity to nominate a charity that will be the focus of Upstate volunteer outreach through the year. Upstate Frame of Mind features discussion on recent trends in substance abuse

The third edition of Upstate Frame of Mind will feature addiction psychiatrists Zsuzsa Meszaros, MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry at Upstate, and Tolani Ajagbe, MD, interim division chief of addiction psychiatry at Upstate and the chief of psychiatry and medical director of addiction treatment services at Crouse Health. The conversation focuses on recent trends in substance use, particularly the opioid epidemic, as well as the rise of nascent substances such as xylazine.
