rTMS study seeks participants with concussion-related headaches

Upstate Physical Therapy Education seeks adults with chronic post-concussion headaches to participate in a clinical trial. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a non-invasive brain stimulation technique, will be used to manage headaches and other post-concussion symptoms. This study takes place in the Motion Analysis Lab at the Institute for Human Performance. Parking and compensation will be included. Global Health seeks study participants

Yearly vaccination is the most effective way to protect yourself from the flu virus and its complications. Registration open for 2024 Health Justice Conference

Registration is now open for the 2024 Health Justice Conference to be held Jan. 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in room 4414 B/C at the Academic Building. Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Center for Philosophy, Psychology and Psychiatry presentation is Nov. 9

Philosopher Richard Boothby, PhD, professor of philosophy at Loyola University, will present Embracing the Void: Rethinking the Origin of the Sacred Thursday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. in the second-floor grand rounds area of 713 Harrison St. Space is limited. Virtual support offered to Upstate Community Hospital staff for transition to Hyperdrive through Nov. 11

Upstate IMT will offer virtual support to Epic users transitioning to Hyperdrive at Upstate Community Hospital now through Nov. 11 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Staff will have access to personalized guidance and assistance for troubleshooting problems. Email sent the week of Nov. 3 provided users with information on how to access real-time virtual support, including where to find Hyperdrive support in Epic and how to troubleshoot common issues. Hyperdrive, which hosts Hyperspace, will become accessible to all Epic users, across all Upstate locations, beginning Nov. 28. Upstate Gala ‘Diamonds and Denim’ is set for Nov. 17 

Gala 2023, hosted by the Upstate Foundation, will be held at the Oncenter Friday, Nov. 17. Festivities begin at 8 p.m., with a patron party for sponsors starting at 7 p.m. The Diamonds and Denim theme welcomes guests to balance comfort with formal attire. For instance, men could wear a jacket with their denim, and women could wear bedazzling jewels and some form of denim. (Yes, you can wear jeans!) Other aspects of the Foundation’s signature event remain the same: small plate dining stations, live band, short presentation and plenty of time for socializing and dancing. Upstate Frame of Mind features discussion on recent trends in substance abuse

The third edition of Upstate Frame of Mind will feature addiction psychiatrists Zsuzsa Meszaros, MD, PhD, professor of psychiatry at Upstate, and Tolani Ajagbe, MD, interim division chief of addiction psychiatry at Upstate and the chief of psychiatry and medical director of addiction treatment services at Crouse Health. The conversation focuses on recent trends in substance use, particularly the opioid epidemic, as well as the rise of nascent substances such as xylazine. The Informed Patient podcast

The Informed Patient podcast recently featured interviews with these specialists about Upstate’s latest volume of poems and essays, a program to help those in long-term care residences, and a mental health crisis overseas.

• Upstate’s literary and visual arts journal, The Healing Muse, is out with a new volume, and editor Deirdre Neilen, PhD, talks about what the journal attempts to do through poems, essays and artwork, along with discussing a few works from the recently released Volume 23. Neilen is an associate professor of bioethics and humanities.

• How ombudsmen can help people living in long-term care facilities is explained by Rebecca Alder of Arise Child and Family Services. She manages the regional ombudsman program, which is always looking for volunteers to visit these residences and hear the residents’ concerns.

• A look at the mental health crisis in Iraq shows the role played by war and political and economic instability. Hani Aiash, MD, PhD, explains the problems and challenges of this crisis. He is an associate professor who serves as assistant dean of interprofessional research in the College of Health Professions.
